Light of the World

by on April 30, 2021

Key Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

In this day and time, it is pure instinct that when we walk into a dark room we immediately turn the light on. Why? So we can see! Light is necessary for many reasons – one being so we can see the things around us. Without light, we simply would not be able to see in darkness. Just as physical light is necessary, in these verses, Jesus describes an even greater type of light that is necessary – spiritual light.

In John 8:12 Jesus says, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus declared in this promise that He is the light of the world and, for those who follow Him, their spiritual darkness will be replaced with the light of truth and eternal life.

In the same way that Jesus says He is the light, He commands His followers to also be the light of the world as we reflect Him. Believers are set apart, to stand out in humble obedience, as we differ from the darkness of the world. This reflection of Christ is so others can see the true Light of life in us as we are witnesses of Him. This light is not to be covered or hidden but rather to be on display to show God’s love, mercy, and kindness. And why do we do this? So that glory is given to the Father!

Question to Consider:

Think on the command God has given you to be the light of the world, thanking Him that He allows us to participate in His plan.

Prayer Prompt:

Father, help me to humbly reflect You in all areas of my life so that others will see You in me.
